Making Right Choices on Solar Solutions

Few tips before deciding Solar Rooftop Photovoltaic (SRTPV) Solution

Undertake an energy audit by knowledgeable EPC vendor (SmartEco does it for free) to assess the need of what capacity and what type of system (on-grid/off-grid/hybrid solar) needed based on your power requirements and budget.

  • Evaluate among on-grid/off-grid/hybrid/zero export solar options. On-grid solution need NOT be always a right choice always.
  • Assess the pros and cons of going for subsidyand external finance. Each has advantage/ disadvantages. Subsidy may not be a right choice if captive consumption is low and for 10KW installations due to lower buy-back tariff. (Refer to SmartEco FAQ).
  • Evaluate various OEM brands used as part of solution. Not all are equal w.r.t quality, brand image and warranty support credentials. Evaluate Indian VS imported brandsfrom long standing market presence perspective to have warranty assurance for 25 long years.
  • Check customer feedback and vendor credentials from ‘technical expertise and local support’ perspective. Local presence of vendor definitely would help to minimise turn-around time when technical issues to be addressed post installation.  
  • Look at total cost of ownership(TCO)for the solution you are looking for, including all EXTRAs, lifetime O&M costs and arrive at ROI. Then decide what is right solution for you.
  • At times combination of grid-tie and small off-grid system may be right approach to go for, rather than single large sized on-grid/off-grid system. Your EPC vendor should guide you what is best for you based on current power consumption and future requirements.
  • Ask for vendor project site visit, meet and discuss with SRTPV owners on type of system choice they made, performance and value delivered,  installation experience and vendor support before deciding.

How to Choose a Right Installer / EPC Vendor

  • Experience and reputation: Look for a solar provider with a proven track record and go by positive feedback in the social media from customers. Check Google reviews and CSAT ratings. Because good customer experiences seldom go unnoticed.
  • Design/installationexperience : Choose one who can design that meets your specific needs and preferences, not someone force-fitting standard solutions to you. Check solution design capabilities on projects done at other places. There are many design anomalies that can impact power production if solution design is not done right.
  • Quality/Brands of components used :Vendors who use premier MNRE approved, quality panels/inverters/BOS components like cables, switches, mounting systems, battery bank and charge controllers etc. All are NOT tier-1 quality brands and all do not come with same warranty coverage.
  • Customer service :Go with someone approachable, quick to respond to your queries and concerns. Check for free post installation technical support offered and how well you are supported beyond that. Go by review feedback.
  • Cost and financing optionsoffered : Consider the total cost of ownership (TCO), including extras mentioned in the quote. Examine costs mentioned as EXTRAs. CESCOM fees/ facilitation charges, transportation costs, GST etc.  If NOT included in the quote,  would surprise you later.  (SmartEco commercial quote is all-inclusive end-to-end costs, unless specified otherwise). Also look for vendor who facilitates easy finance with pocket friendly EMI plans.
  • Liaison experience :Choose a vendor who can liaison with CESCOM, Govt Agencies, OEMs, Banks/NBFCs for many things that you don’t have to worry about.  e.g. efforts on getting PPA paperwork, CESCOM approvals, consolidating connections, addressing billing reconciliation issues, help warranty claims with OEMs, arranging finance etc. It would make going solar that much easier.
  • Finally, installation setup quality :  Theuse of different type/quality of mounting structures, custom fabricated VS nut-bolt assembly, long aluminium railings for GI roofings, panel array designs and # of charge controllers/inverters in an installation, proper remote monitoring setup to feed power generation data to remote data servers etc. All will count for delivery of a long lasting efficient solar installation. Unfortunately, you will come to know the lack of it only after installation is handed over to you. Make sure your EPC vendor is knowledgeable enough to address all your queries on these prior to engaging them.

In an on-grid solar system, solar panels will continue to produce power during the day. This power can either be used instantly or exported to the grid with no backup for power outages. If at any time the system runs out of power, it draws the same from the electricity grid. Hence, a user will never run out of power in this case. Similarly, any excess that is produced by the system is fed to the grid. The advantage of an on-grid system is that the user will get a credit in his electricity bill for the extra power he sent to the grid. So, his electricity bills will also reduce. On-grid is the most common type of system used, Also known as grid-connected solar or grid-tied solar. The On-grid system is connected to the grid and no batteries are attached to the system. A major advantage of an On-grid system is that system exports any excess power generated back into the utility grid for which the owner gets paid credits. Whereas on the other side the solar panel system is unable to work efficiently during cloudy days or at nigh.
